Peace Program

Each year, Carmel Montessori Academy begins the first day of school by gathering together outside for a 20-minute Peace Ceremony. The entire school community participates, using songs and quotations about peace to reconnect with the core values that will guide them throughout the year. Before the routines of a new school year begin, students and educators take this time to reflect on kindness, respect, understanding, and what it means to live peacefully alongside others.

The ceremony may happen on the first day, but peace is something Carmel students practice throughout the year. In a small, close-knit school community, children learn to listen to one another, work through differences, care for shared spaces, help younger and older students, and recognize how their choices affect the people around them. Through everyday relationships, community service, field trips, and shared responsibilities, students learn that being part of a community also means taking responsibility for how they contribute to it.

Carmel is recognized as an International Peace Site, connecting these everyday experiences to a much larger idea. Students learn that peace begins with how we treat the people beside us and extends to how we understand and interact with the wider world. Beginning each school year together with the Peace Ceremony is a reminder of that commitment: peace is not simply something we talk about at Carmel; it is something we practice together.
